Naftogaz prepares sufficient volumes of gas for possible higher consumption by TPPs for electricity generation – company head

KYIV. Nov 13 (Interfax-Ukraine) – NJSC Naftogaz Ukrainy has prepared sufficient gas reserves in case of a possible increase in resource consumption by thermal power plants (TPP) to produce electricity at their gas units, said head of Naftogaz Group Oleksiy Chernyshov.

“As for combined heat and power plants (CHPP), their gas consumption will not increase. As for thermal power plants, their level of consumption may increase significantly. This may be a likely consequence of the challenges that electricity generation will face in the event of massive shelling by the aggressor. But we have reserve volume to ensure electricity generation,” Chernyshov said in a comment to the Interfax-Ukraine agency on the sidelines of the forum “Success Formula for Ukraine. Big Day with NV” on November 11.

He did not indicate exactly what volume he was talking about.

“This is a sufficient volume,” Chernyshov assured.

As reported with reference to the head of Naftogaz Group, gas reserves in underground storage facilities currently amount to more than 16 billion cubic meters. The government’s plan for accumulating the resource at the beginning of the autumn-winter period 2023/2024 is 14.7 billion cubic meters. Naftogaz expects to get through this heating season at the expense of Ukrainian production.

In the event of damage or destruction of coal blocks, Ukraine plans to connect gas-fired thermal power plant units for electricity generation.
