NBU head expects formation of strategy for restoring lending by late 2023

KYIV. Sept 15 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Andriy Pyshnyy expects that the formation of a strategy for restoring lending will take place before the end of 2023.

“The strategy for renewing lending is a clear calibration of existing state support programs, and the identification of strategic directions for the work of state banks, and an understanding of the real problems that need to be solved … I hope that, having completed and gone through the difficult budget process, we will return to those developments, which are already taking place within the walls of the National Bank … I think that by the end of the year we will at least come out with an understanding of what a comprehensive strategy for resuming lending will look like,” he said during a press briefing on Thursday.

Pyshnyy added that the lending resumption strategy will very clearly structure existing initiatives, outline areas of responsibility, and allow for a joint inventory of available resources and issues that need to be addressed, in particular issues of the state banking sector.

“After the nationalization of Sense Bank, the state is the owner of the shareholders of all the largest, in fact private banks – except for foreign ones, of course – in Ukraine. PrivatBank, Oschadbank, Ukreximbank, Ukrgasbank, and Sense Bank. In our deep conviction, this is a colossal resource that also requires appropriate attention of clear, strategic, adapted to current conditions and, most importantly, built on an understanding of the next perspective of strategic directions of activity,” added the head of the NBU.
