New housing construction volume 39% down in Jan-Sept – statistics

KYIV. Dec 15 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The total area of residential buildings for which permits for construction work (new construction) were issued decreased by 39% in January-September 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, to 3.17 million square meters, the State Statistics Service has reported.

According to the statistics agency, in January-September, the total area of new construction of apartment buildings reached 3.06 million square meters (96% of the total volume). The number of apartments in multi-apartment buildings announced at the start of construction was 35,200, which is 47.4% less than last year.

In Kyiv, during this period, the total area of new housing construction fell by 54.7% compared to January-September 2022, to 296,100 square meters; in Kyiv region – by 68.2%, to 468.3 million square meters; in Lviv region – by 24.9%, to 579,100 square meters; and in Khmelnytsky region – by 25.2%, to 199,000 square meters.

A significant reduction in volumes was also shown by Rivne (by 80%, to 30,100 square meters), Volyn (by 77%, to 97,000 square meters), Ternopil (by 66.5%, to 67,900 square meters) and Odesa (by 59.2%, to 92,900 square meters) regions.

The largest increase in the volume of new construction in January-September 2023 was recorded in Chernivtsi region (326.4% more compared to last year, to 199,000 square meters), Ivano-Frankivsk region (281% more, to 413,700 square meters), Dnipropetrovsk (131.2% more, to 103,000 square meters), Vinnytsia (40.4% more, to 145,800 square meters) and Zakarpattia (15.3% more, to 124,700 square meters) regions.

In other regions of Ukraine, the volume of new construction during this period was less than 100,000 square meters, or data is missing.

The State Statistics Service recalled that the indicators are given without taking into account temporarily occupied territories and parts of the territories where hostilities are (were) ongoing.
