SBU prevents attempt to remove from Ukraine equipment for MiG-29 jets – prosecutor's office

KHARKIV. Nov 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Directorate of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in Kharkiv region has exposed and detained a group of three people who developed a scheme for the illegal removal of military goods from Ukraine. The attempted to sell abroad stolen equipment from JSC Motor Sich.

“The three men were notified of suspicion of being involved in the preparations for the violation of the procedure of transferring abroad the goods that are subject to state export control (Part 1 of Article 14, Part 1 of Article 333 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine),” the press service of Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office said.

According to the investigation, a businessman from Kharkiv organized the scheme. The three defendants are involved in the stealing of spare parts for aircraft from Ukrainian defense industry enterprises and their further illegal sale to foreign customers.

As a result of a complex of measures taken by law enforcers in Kharkiv, Zaporizhia, Odesa, and Kyiv regions, the illegal sale of an aircraft device worth around UAH 2 million, which had been stolen from Motor Sich, to Asian customers was prevented.

“This device is an integral part of a new Ukrainian aircraft engine which is used in Chinese supersonic training aircraft,” the press service said.

Law enforcers also prevented the removal of the territory of Ukraine of an automated radar unit for MiG-29 aircraft which is designed to detect aircraft in the friend-or-foe mode for air defense systems.

In Odesa region, law enforcers prevented an attempt to illegally export Ukrainian-made components for military helicopters to a country in East Asia through the territory of the so-called Pridnestrovian Moldovan Republic.

Law enforcers continue to work on the identification of other persons involved in the scheme.
