Turkey supplies cluster munitions to Ukraine – media

WASHINGTON. Jan 11 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Since November 2022, Turkey has been supplying Ukraine with so-called dual-purpose improved conventional munition (DPICM), Foreign Policy publication has reported, citing American and Turkish sources.

Considered effective against armored vehicles and manpower, these munitions were made in Turkey during the Cold War era under a co-production agreement with the United States, the report said.

Kyiv pleaded Washington to provide it with this ammunition, but was refused due to the fact that the United States is barred from exporting DPICM in accordance with U.S. law, the publication said.

"After the U.S. denied [Ukraine] access to cluster munitions, Turkey was the only place they could get them," said one source briefed on the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

He added that "it just shows how even as Turkey cozies up to Russia in some respects, it’s become a really important supporter for Ukraine militarily."
