Ukraine starts creating green corridor between Reni-Giurgiulesti-Galati border crossing points

KYIV. Oct 26 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine has begun negotiations with Moldova and Romania on the creation of a green corridor between automobile border crossing points Reni (Ukraine) – Giurgiulesti (Moldova) – Galati (Romania) to facilitate the movement of goods and the export of Ukrainian agricultural products, the press service of the Ministry of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine reported.

This became the key topic of negotiations with the participation of Secretary of State of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development of the Republic of Moldova Mircea Păscăluță and State Secretary of Transport and Infrastructure of Romania Ionel Scrioşteanu.

“The proposal to introduce the green corridor includes a number of measures for all three countries. First of all, we are talking about joint control between Ukraine and Moldova and coordinated control between Moldova and Romania. Thanks to this decision, we will be able to reduce the number of stops for trucks and, accordingly, speed up control. Globally, this decision will allow us to resolve the issue of comprehensive infrastructure development on the Ukrainian-Moldavian-Romanian border,” the press service quoted Deputy Minister of Development of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure of Ukraine Serhiy Derkach.

The ministry recalled that these border crossing points are located close to each other and are strategic for goods transported by car to ports, including Romanian Galati. To create the green corridor, in addition to introducing joint control, a number of other decisions are needed, in particular, the construction of the Reni border crossing point. In this case, representatives of Moldova’s regulatory authorities will be able to carry out all the necessary procedures when leaving Ukraine.

Derkach also said that to facilitate the movement of goods and the export of Ukrainian agricultural products to Romanian ports, joint customs and border control with Moldova will be introduced at the Ukrainian border crossing point Reni.

“We are starting work on arranging the border crossing point. We plan to implement general control starting next year,” he wrote on Facebook, adding that this project will allow trucks to make two stops instead of three – at the exit from Ukraine and at the entrance to Romania.

According to the Ministry of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development, the plan for launching the green corridor also provides for the reconstruction of the Reni-Galati road and its expansion from two to four lanes, as well as additional technical equipment for border crossing points.

Currently, the Reni-Giurgiulesti border crossing point handles about 50 trucks per day. This is one of the key road border crossing points leading to Romanian ports. The key goal of developing the infrastructure of this border crossing point and the green corridor is to increase the actual throughput capacity, at least, five times, the ministry said.
