Ukrainian nuclear scientist Valentyn Kupny passes away

KYIV. Jan 2 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukrainian nuclear energy and security expert Valentyn Kupny passed away in January 1, 2023 at the age of 88 after a long-lasting disease.

"At the time, Valentyn Kupny headed Zaporizhia NPP [Nuclear Power Plant]. He started to work in the Chornobyl exclusion zone from 1988. In 1989 through 2000, in the Chornobyl zone, he was in charge of its most complicated Confinement facility," the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine said on its website on Monday.

The author of dozens of scientific works and developments, Kupny was in charge of the implementation of the Action Plan for transforming the Confinement facility into an environmentally safe system. Also, he was an active member of the Public Council under the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate for a long time.

"Even having retired and until the end of his life, Valentyn Ipolytovych continued to work on the issues of nuclear and radiation safety, in particular on the issues of Chornobyl NPP and the Confinement facility," it said.

The personnel of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine offered condolences to the family and friends of the scientist.
