KYIV. Jan 5 (Interfax-Ukraine) – JSC Ukrzaliznytsia transported 25 million passengers on long-distance trains in 2023, reaching pre-war figures for 2022, the Ukrzaliznytsia’s press service reported on Friday.
“In terms of the volume of passengers transported, we have already reached the levels of 2022 before the large-scale invasion,” Ukrzaliznytsia Board Chairman Yevhen Liaschenko said.
According to him, passenger traffic to the countries of the European Union in 2023 increased to 2.1 million people, which is 2.1 times more than in 2022.
“A record number of passengers were transported to EU countries, but demand remains very high. Therefore, we are working to expand international routes and increase seats on existing ones,” Liaschenko said.
In addition, according to group requests, almost 450,000 passengers were transported in 2023, including children from families affected by war, children from internally displaced families and passengers of other socially vulnerable categories.
At the beginning of last year, Ukrzaliznytsia reported that in 2022, it transported 16.9 million passengers and evacuated another 4 million. 1.4 million passengers were transported to and from EU countries, which is almost 10 times more than in 2021, and another 600,000 were evacuated to EU countries.
