KYIV. Nov 16 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The UN World Food Programme (UN WFP) is expanding its support for the school meal program in Ukraine, according to the Education and Science Ministry of Ukraine.
“The UN World Food Programme has signed agreements with eleven regions on support for daily school lunches for more than 60,000 children in 420 schools of the country,” the ministry’s press service said on Thursday.
Last year, the UN WFP and the Education and Science Ministry signed a memorandum of mutual understanding and cooperation for the implementation of the school meal program.
During the first stage of the program, the UN WFP supported the preparation of meals for 12,000 children at 58 schools in Kyiv region.
According to the ministry, during the 2023-2024 academic year, the UN WFP will provide financing for 30% of hot meals for 1-4 grade students in Kyiv, Lviv, Zakarpattia, Ternopil, Khmelnytsky, Chernihiv, Chernivtsi, Cherkasy, Mykolaiv, Odesa, and Poltava regions.
“The regions were selected based on a range of criteria, including the level of food security and the number of internally displaced persons [hosted by the region],” it said.
