WFP holds tender to procure 75,000 tonnes of foodstuffs in Ukraine under Grain from Ukraine initiative – Ministry of Agrarian Policy

KYIV. Dec 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The UN World Food Program (WFP) is holding a tender to procure 75,000 tonnes of foodstuffs for Ethiopia and Yemen under the Grain from Ukraine humanitarian initiative.

As reported on the website of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, this information was announced on December 26 during a working meeting between Minister Mykola Solsky and a WFP delegation headed by Country Director of the World Food Program Matthew Hollingworth.

The ministry said that at the meeting, the parties discussed the state of implementation of the Grain from Ukraine initiative and steps for the interaction of partners at each stage of its implementation.

At the same time, Solsky recalled that within the framework of Grain from Ukraine, three vessels with 80,000 tonnes of wheat for Ethiopia and Somalia have already left Ukrainian ports.

As reported, on December 27, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy announced the launch of tenders by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine for the purchase of 59,000 tonnes of wheat with a quality of at least grade 3, which will be delivered to African and Asian countries as part of the Grain from Ukraine humanitarian food initiative.

Also last week, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine decided to increase humanitarian aid to African and Asian countries by an additional 21,000 tonnes of corn or wheat, thanks to which the Republic of Sudan, the Republic of Yemen, the Republic of Kenya and the Federal Republic of Nigeria will receive up to 210,000 tonnes of grain from Ukraine.

As of the end of November 2002, more than 30 countries and international organizations have joined Grain from Ukraine, raising more than $180 million in total.

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the UK, Greece, Estonia, the EU, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Canada, Qatar, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Poland, Portugal, the Republic of Korea, Romania, Slovenia, the United States, Turkey, Hungary, Finland, France, Croatia, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Sweden and Japan, as well as NATO and the UN announced the provision of financial assistance.
