KYIV. May 25 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Director of the Ukrainian Institute of Books (UIB) Oleksandra Koval has said that there are only 130 bookstores in Ukraine.
“Where can Ukrainians buy books? Before the war, there were about 200 bookstores throughout Ukraine … This means that there is one bookstore per 200,000 people. While in Europe, this figure is approximately one bookstore per 20,000 of population. Now during the war we count only 130 of them,” she said at the Polish-Ukrainian conference Reading for the Sake of Democracy on Thursday.
According to Koval, from 2021 to 2022, the number of published book titles has also significantly decreased from 21,000 to 9,700, as well as circulations from 45 million to 11.6 million copies.
