EU Council decides to support ammunition production

KYIV. July 20 (Interfax-Ukraine) – On Thursday, the EU Council approved a proposal to increase the production of ammunition and missiles with the support of the Union, the council’s press service has said.

“The Council of the EU adopts the Act in Support of Ammunition Production; it will enter into force the day after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU,” the council’s press service said on Twitter.

It is noted that this measure will “bolster and speed up the EU’s own production of ammunition and missiles to better support Ukraine and strengthen the EU’s defence.”

This provision was approved by the European Parliament last week.

According to the document, by introducing appropriate targeted measures, including funding of EUR 500 million, the Regulation on supporting ammunition production (ASAP) is called upon to “increase EU production capacity to address the current shortfalls of defense products, in particular artillery ammunition, missiles and their components.”

On March 20, 2023, the Council of the EU agreed on a “three-track approach” aimed at providing Ukraine with one million artillery ammunition by the joint efforts of the countries of the union within the next 12 months to counter the aggressor country Russia, which continues the full-scale war against Ukraine. In particular, it was about increasing the production of ammunition and missiles in the EU.
