UGA reports delay of ships with grain in ports of Big Odesa

KYIV. Oct 25 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Ukrainian Grain Association (UGA) asks the government to intervene in the situation with the groundless delay of ships loaded with grain in the ports of Big Odesa, the press service of the business association reported.

“Every day of delay of ships loaded with grain in ports leads to losses of $1-1.5 per tonne of product per day. If we take the Handysize vessel with deadweight of 50,000 tonnes as an example, then the losses for the exporter due to the delay of the vessel in the port are “$50,000-75,000 per day, which the exporter is forced to pay to the ship owner. In addition, the costs of insuring such ships are growing due to their stay in Ukrainian ports,” UGA said.

UGA is convinced that in conditions when the export of grain and agricultural products provides the lion’s share of the country’s foreign exchange earnings and a significant part of the collection of taxes into the state budget, which Ukraine can spend on military needs, “unreasonable delay of ships in ports is a crime.”

Such delays of ships in ports are in no way related to weather conditions or navigation, the business association said.

UGA called on the Ukrainian government to intervene in the situation created by officials at the regional level, asked to stop delaying ships and unblock grain exports as quickly as possible.
