KYIV. Oct 26 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Olena Kondratiuk and Head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Mexican Senate Héctor Enrique Vasconcelos discussed issues of UN reform.
“We dwelled in detail on the need to reform the UN to strengthen the role of this organization in global processes. In particular, they talked about the need to revise the veto power in the UN Security Council,” Kondratiuk said on Facebook on Thursday.
The deputy chairman said Vasconcelos agrees that UN reform is overdue and it is necessary to start with veto procedures. According to Kondratiuk, he also shares the opinion that in order to strengthen the effectiveness of the organization, it is necessary to achieve mandatory implementation of UN resolutions and expand membership in the Security Council. Vasconcelos is also convinced that Ukraine and Mexico must work together to achieve this goal.
“During the meeting, she emphasized that the aggressor country Russia, as a state violating the UN Charter, does not have the right to be a member of the Security Council,” Kondratiuk said.
She also said Vasconcelos should soon become Mexico’s permanent representative to the UN.
“And this gives confidence in Mexico’s continued unwavering support within the UN for its principled position on the inviolability of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as the condemnation of Russian aggression,” Kondratiuk said.
As reported, Kondratiuk is on an official visit to Mexico.
