Ukraine not asking concessions on its path to EU – Zelenskyy

KYIV. Nov 4 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine is not asking any concessions on its path to the European Union and implements all the recommendations given by the European Commission, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said at a joint press conference with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in Kyiv on Saturday.

“We have implemented the recommendations necessary to kickstart membership talks. This refers to the rule of law, protection of human rights and freedoms of national communities, more transparency in the operation of public institutions, and strengthening of the anti-corruption infrastructure,” he said.

Speaking about the draft laws, Zelenskyy highlighted the bill on lobbying which “will make political processes more transparent and reliably protect the state against destructive influence of oligarchs and other persons trying to evade the rule of law.”

According to the president, “it is very important to keep the support of Europe and the rest of our partners as consistent and reliable. This is about defense and financial assistance. Russia should see that the world is not retreating, defending freedom and international law.”

Zelenskyy also said he expects further strengthening of sanctions, including “the prevention of circumvention of the existing sanctions, in particular, through European companies and territories of Russia’s neighboring countries.”
