KYIV. Nov 13 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Lychakivsky District Court of Lviv has issued a guilty verdict against former Member of Parliament Illia Kiva on Monday.
“The court has found the defendant guilty of criminal offences under Part 3 of Article 109 (public calls for forcible change and overthrow of the constitutional order and for the seizure of state power in the media by a person who represents the authorities), Part 1 of Article 111 (high treason, i.e. an act intentionally committed by a citizen of Ukraine to the detriment of Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability, defense capability, state, economic or information security of Ukraine), Part 2 of Article 436-1 (public use of the symbols of the communist totalitarian regime by an person who represents the authorities), Article 436 (public calls for a war of aggression) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine,” the press service of the court said.
Kiva was sentenced to 14 years in prison with a confiscation of property.
The trial was held in absentia as Kiva has been hiding from the investigation agencies and court in the territory of Russia and is on an international wanted list.
The text of the court ruling will be available in a few days in the Unified Register of Court Decisions.
The court ruling has not entered into force yet and can be appealed in Lviv Court of Appeals within 30 days since its proclamation.
