KYIV. Nov 14 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Leader of the Republican minority in the U.S. Senate, Mitch McConnell, said he supports a two-step plan to finance the government to avoid a shutdown, without including assistance to Ukraine, The Hill reported on Tuesday.
According to him, the proposal made by Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson is “a responsible measure that will keep the lights on, avoid a harmful lapse in federal spending” and will allow congressmen to complete work on annual budget bills within the next two months.
McConnell noted that he calls on his colleagues to also support this initiative aimed at preventing the suspension of the work of the government.
Last weekend, Johnson presented a two-stage plan for financing the government. The deadline for the previously agreed temporary financing of the government and the prevention of a shutdown, defined by the bill in October, expires on November 17.
At the first stage, the bill provides funding until January 19 and includes allocations for agriculture, military construction and veterans affairs, energy and water supply.
The second stage, which is proposed to be extended until February 2, will include funding for the rest of the government.
At the same time, as the American media noted, the bill does not provide additional assistance to Israel or Ukraine.
