KYIV. Nov 15 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Enterprises dealing with scrap ferrous metals in January-October 2023 reduced supplies of scrap to metallurgical enterprises of Ukraine by 0.6% compared to the same period in 2022, to 796,800 tonnes from 801,700 tonnes and 3.5 times compared to the first 10 months of 2021 (2.777 million tonnes).
As reported in the operational information of the Ukrainian Association of Secondary Metals (UAVtormet) on Wednesday, the procurement of scrap metal in January-October 2023 increased by 13.4% compared to the same period last year, to 993,000 tonnes from 875,300 tonnes. However, it decreased 75% times compared to the first 10 months of 2021 (3.444 million tonnes).
At the same time, scrap metal exports for the specified period reached 146,900 tonnes compared to 37,700 tonnes for January-October 2022 (an increase of 3.9 times). At the same time, scrap imports amounted to 900 tonnes, while in 10 months of 2022 – 2,000 tonnes.
As of November 1, 2023, the level of scrap metal reserves at metallurgical enterprises in Ukraine was estimated at 15,000-20,000 tonnes.
UAVtormet forecasts the procurement of ferrous scrap metal of 1.25-1.3 million tonnes in 2023. In addition, it is predicted that supplies of scrap to the country’s metallurgical enterprises will be 1-1.05 million tonnes. Scrap metal exports are expected to be 180,000-200,000 tonnes, imports – 800-1,200 tonnes, and steel production – 5.8-6 million tonnes.
