KYIV. Nov 15 (Interfax-Ukraine) – German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said the war in Ukraine is moving out of public view, but Ukrainians now need support.
“Germany stands firmly on the side of Ukraine – and we will be by your side as long as necessary. Ukraine needs our support even more now, when there is a war in the Middle East, and Ukraine no longer receives the attention it deserves so sharply. Putin’s calculation is this: the world must forget Ukraine. But I say clearly here: we should not and will not provide this service to Putin. We will not be able to get used to Russia’s illegal and inhumane aggressive war,” he said at the German-Ukrainian Municipal Partnerships Conference in Leipzig.
Steinmeier also said it is important now to consolidate partnerships and count on long-term support, “because the war did not end just because other conflicts eclipsed the headlines.”
The president said the approaching winter will again be tough for Ukraine.
“Hence the initiative to create a ‘winter protective umbrella’ to better protect Ukrainian infrastructure and provide the population with heat and electricity in winter. As we all know: the Kremlin also uses energy as a weapon. And not only that! We have seen the most brutal methods of warfare,” he said.
