By KYIV. Nov 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – President of National Nuclear Generating Company Energoatom Petro Kotin and CEO of the UK-based Urenco Boris Schucht signed a contract for the supply of enriched uranium product for Ukrainian nuclear power plants until 2035.
According to a report from the Ukrainian company on its Telegram channel, the contract includes the possibility of extension until 2043.
“Energoatom has reached a new important strategic agreement with our reliable partner Urenco and will receive a stable supply of enriched uranium for the production of nuclear fuel for decades to come,” Kotin, whose words are quoted in the report, said.
Energy Minister Herman Haluschenko said that Ukraine is working to increase uranium production and strengthen cooperation with international partners in this area to ensure national security.
Energoatom recalled that after the abandonment of Russian nuclear fuel, Westinghouse became the only supplier of fuel assemblies for the needs of Ukrainian nuclear power plants, and uranium enrichment for their production is carried out by Urenco.
“We have supported our customer Energoatom and its employees and increased the supply of nuclear enrichment services to help ensure energy independence and security of supply. This agreement will continue our productive working relationship,” Schucht said in the report.
As reported, Energoatom and Urenco entered into an agreement on the supply of enriched uranium in August 2019. The current contracts between the companies for the supply of enriched uranium product and natural uranium hexafluoride (UF6) expire in 2025.
