Slovak PM to meet with Shmyhal at beginning of 2024

KYIV. Dec 4 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico had a phone conversation with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and announced his intention to meet with the Ukrainian counterpart at the beginning of 2024.

“Today, I held the announced phone call with Prime Minister of Ukraine, Mr. Shmyhal. I confirmed Slovakia’s interest in helping Ukraine in the humanitarian and civil spheres,” Fico said on Facebook on Monday.

He also said that he “excluded the supply of weapons and ammunition from state warehouses and the army.”

“We do not believe in a military solution to the conflict in Ukraine, because it only leads to unnecessary bloodshed without results,” Fico said.

He emphasized that Slovakia will continue to ban the import of Ukrainian agricultural products to its territory, “because we would be going against our own farmers.”

Slovakia is ready to help Ukraine in demining, as well as supply special equipment for this, to cooperate in the energy sector, including the monitoring of civilian nuclear facilities, and to provide humanitarian aid, the prime minister said.

Fico also stressed that Slovakia supports the European perspective of Ukraine and Moldova, “but together with the countries of the Western Balkans,” and is in favor of the upcoming revision of the EU budget for the years 2024-2027 under the conditions that have been publicly defined by the prime minister.

“We will meet with Prime Minister Shmyhal at the Slovak-Ukrainian border in early 2024, the subject of the meeting will be cooperation in the mentioned areas,” he said.
