PISA 2022 results disappointing but quite predictable – Lisovy

KYIV. Dec 5 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The 2022 results of the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA 2022) on Ukraine are disappointing but quite predictable, Education and Science Minister of Ukraine Oksen Lisovy has said.

“The figures are disappointing but quite predictable for us, taking into account the circumstances in which we were, in which our children and our education were,” he said during the presentation of the survey results.

In particular, according to the assessment, Ukraine dropped by 12 points in math in comparison with the PISA 2018 results (from 453 to 441), by 19 points in science (from 469 to 450), and by 38 points in reading (from 466 to 428).

According to the minister, the worsening of results was caused by the long-lasting restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic and the education system’s unpreparedness for them, the full-scale war, and stress.

Lisovy also noted that a decline in results was registered not only in Ukraine, but also in other countries under review, due to the pandemic and long-lasting remote education.

The survey was conducted in October 2022 via two-hour tests in math, reading, science and creative thinking. The total number of participants was 3,876 from 164 educational institutions in 17 regions and Kyiv (the study was not conducted in seven regions and temporarily occupied Crimea).

PISA is an international education quality assessment program, which was launched in 1997, and is coordinated by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). It assesses the math, reading and science literacy levels of 15-year-olds in more than 80 countries/economies around the world.
