Speaker of US House of Reps not to support package of assistance to Ukraine until issue of American border security resolved

KYIV. Dec 5 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, sent a letter to the White House, in which he indicated that he would not support the allocation of new aid to Ukraine until the approach to security measures at American borders are changed.

“Supplemental Ukraine funding is dependent upon enactment of transformative change to our nation’s body security laws,” a letter that Johnson posted on his X account says.

He noted that the lower house of the U.S. Congress six months ago was engaged in the development of reforms related to U.S. border security, but “Senate democrats have refused to act on that bill.”

In his letter he also stressed that “the open U.S. border is unconscionable and unsustainable catastrophe.”

In addition, he added that Congress and the American people should receive answers to a number of questions of concern to them, in particular, about the White House’s strategy in Ukraine.

In October, U.S. President Joe Biden sent a request to Congress for financial assistance to Ukraine in the amount of $61.4 billion for a year, as well as $14.3 billion to strengthen Israel’s defense. In addition, Biden requested $13.6 billion for the protection of the border between the United States and Mexico, $7.4 billion for other national security priorities. In total, the U.S. President has requested Congressional approval for additional funding in the amount of $106.7 billion.
