KYIV. Dec 6 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Commissioner for the Protection of the state language Taras Kremin, based on the results of the international study of the quality of education PISA-2022, will prepare recommendations to public authorities on improving the academic performance of Ukrainian students.
“According to the commissioner, the biggest concern is the significant drop in the results of Ukrainian students in key indicators. The difference in the reading results of Ukrainian 15-year-old students and their peers in the countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development is critical 48 points. This result indicates that the state needs to increase attention to the issues of humanitarian security of Ukraine. I emphasize this just during the National Reading Week, because we are talking about the stable future of the state,” the press service of the language Ombudsman reports.
Kremin is convinced that the adoption of a state program defined by the language law to promote mastery of the state language, the implementation of the Reading Development Strategy for 2021-2025, as well as the implementation of the law on stimulating Ukrainian book publishing and book distribution will contribute to improving the situation.
PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) is an international study of the quality of education, which was launched in 1997. It is coordinated by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). It evaluates the level of mathematical, reading and natural science literacy of 15-year-olds in more than 80 countries/economies of the world.
As reported, the results of the PISA 2018 study showed that every fourth fifteen-year-old student in Ukraine has a low level of reading, mathematical and natural science literacy.
The results of the PISA-2022 study show that in mathematics and natural sciences, Ukrainian schoolchildren lag behind their peers from OECD countries by one and a half years of study, and in reading – by almost two and a half years of study. It is also noted that only 58% of Ukrainian students have achieved a basic level of mathematical literacy, 59% – reading and 66% – natural science literacy.
The national report provides information on the success of Ukrainian 15-year-olds, including against the background of the results of their peers in other OECD countries, as well as compared with the achievements of apprenticeships as of 2018, when Ukraine first participated in the PISA study.
