BRUSSELS. Dec 15 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban did not use his veto on the decision to open membership talks with Ukraine.
Varadkar said Orban did not agree with that decision and he did not change his point of view, but he decided not to use the power of veto, since any country can block accession talks. He said he respected that Orban did not do that; otherwise, he would have put the European Union in a very difficult position. The Irish Prime Minister said they made that decision, and Hungary decided not to block it.
At the same time, Varadkar said the decision was made faster than they expected. He said it is a big geopolitical message, not only for Moscow, but for the whole world; when the EU says that it stands for democracy, they do it, and when they say that they will be close to Ukraine as long as it takes, they are and they mean it, he said.
