KYIV. Dec 15 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The leaders of the EU countries were unable to reach a consensus on Friday night on the topic of further financial assistance to Ukraine and will return to discussing the issue in early 2024, the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, told reporters.
We will prepare a summit that will take place early next year, Michel said.
He explained that it will again discuss the revision of the EU budget, which provides for the allocation of an aid package to Ukraine in the amount of EUR 50 billion over the coming years. At the same time, Michel confirmed that the main obstacle to the approval of the new version of the budget is the position of Hungary.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban confirmed on the X network that he blocked the allocation of funds for Ukraine at the summit.
“We will come back to the issue next year in the EUCO after proper preparation,” he wrote.
Politico, citing sources, notes that at the current summit, Hungary made it clear that it would not change its position on financial assistance to Ukraine, so the participants decided to postpone the discussion of this issue to the beginning of 2024.
