Kuleba after European Council's decision to open talks: Everything is not in vain

BRUSSELS. Dec 15 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleby said the decision to start negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU is a new beginning for Ukraine and the whole of Europe.

“What a historic day! One emotion dominates: everything was not in vain. The decision to open Ukraine’s accession talks is a new beginning for Ukraine and all of Europe. I thank the EU and all leaders for keeping their word. I also congratulate Moldova and Nicu Popescu,” he said on X (Twitter).

Later on his Instagram, the minister said one of the European leaders told him today that “we will not leave this room until we make a decision.”

“And that captures some of the tension of the last week. But it is precisely this kind of determination that makes history. And faith in victory. When everyone said that there would be no result, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believed in victory and worked for it,” Kuleba said.

He also said on Monday, after a meeting with the Hungarian minister, he asked for some time for diplomacy.

“Thank you for believing and waiting. Congratulations to everyone on this historic day. Now my phone is ringing off the hook with calls from fellow EU foreign ministers. And this is yet another proof that nothing will stop Ukraine’s accession to the EU, because this is the logic of history and the will of the Ukrainian people. I said, I say, and I will always repeat it. And there are enough forces in Europe who understand that Ukraine’s membership in the EU means the security and prosperity of Europe,” Kuleba said.

He also said “our people, our soldiers deserved this victory.”

“Victory, which is a component of our great victory, which will certainly happen,” the head of the Foreign Ministry said.
