EUR 150 mln EBRD loan to Ukrenergo to be used to balance energy system, fulfill PSO

KYIV. Dec 15 (Interfax-Ukraine) – NPC Ukrenergo will receive a EUR 150 million loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to maintain liquidity and sustainability of the energy system operator under martial law, the company has reported.

According to a report on its website on Friday, the agreements were signed today by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso and Board Chairman of Ukrenergo Volodymyr Kudrytsky.

These funds are provided to finance the capital structure support project and will be used to cover Ukrenergo’s key costs of balancing the energy system and fulfilling the public service obligations (PSO) assigned to the company by the state.

“This is a significant contribution of our partners to the energy security of Ukraine. I thank the EBRD for the effective support and level of trust in our company. I am grateful to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and the government for the fruitful work to strengthen the sustainability of our energy system,” Kudrytsky said, whose words are quoted in the report.

The company said that since the beginning of the full-scale war, the EBRD has provided more than EUR 600 million in financing to Ukrenergo. These funds supported the liquidity of electricity market participants and allowed energy companies to prepare for the last heating season. Also, due to this financing, projects for comprehensive restoration are being implemented, including the restoration of the Ukrainian backbone network, Ukrenergo added.
