KYIV. Dec 20 (Interfax-Ukraine) – More than a hundred executions of civilians, as well as widespread torture and ill-treatment of detainees, have been recorded in the territories occupied by Russian troops. This was stated by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, the UN said on its website on December 19.
“They include 142 cases of summary execution of civilians since February 2022, in territory controlled by Russian armed forces or occupied by the Russian Federation. On occupied territory, we have documented widespread torture and ill-treatment of detainees, including sexual violence, as well as large numbers of enforced disappearances,” Türk said.
The UN Office has also confirmed more than 10,000 civilian deaths since February 2022, including more than 560 children. It has been confirmed that another 18,500 civilians were injured, many of them seriously.
“The true toll is probably substantially higher,” the UN High Commissioner stressed.
