KYIV. Dec 25 (Interfax-Ukraine) – London Mayor Sadiq Khan agreed to hand over the scrapped cars to Ukraine after criticism, in particular, from the media and Boris Johnson, The Telegraph reports.
Londoners hand over these cars for recycling under the ULEZ program to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere, receiving two thousand pounds for them. If cars that do not comply with emission standards remain with their owners, then an additional tax must be paid for them.
Earlier, the mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, asked to transfer them to Ukraine, since many cars, in particular trucks and SUVs, would be useful to the Armed Forces at the front. Then Khan refused the request, noting that it would not bring economic, social and environmental benefits to Londoners.
However, after a media campaign and criticism from Boris Johnson, Khan changed his mind and asked Transport Minister Mark Harper to amend the national rules for issuing a Certificate of Destruction and to make it “possible for Londoners, and others across the country, to donate suitable vehicles to Ukraine through scrappage schemes.”
