Ministry of Culture confirms over 550 war crimes of Russia against Ukraine's cultural heritage

KYIV. Oct 27 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine has confirmed more than 550 episodes of war crimes by Russian troops against the cultural heritage of Ukraine.

"In general, the statistics from the regions are about 1,000 damaged cultural heritage sites and cultural institutions, some of which are located in ordinary modern houses. The latest figures we have verified for today are more than 550 episodes of destruction or damage," Deputy Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine Kateryna Chueva said at the international scientific-practical conference "Cultural heritage in war: protection, preservation and restoration" in Kyiv on Wednesday.

According to her, among the damaged objects, in particular, 171 objects are with the status of a memorial, 146 objects are of valuable historical buildings, 58 are monuments and works of art that are not registered as monuments of cultural heritage (monuments to the ATO heroes, mosaics, stained-glass windows, etc.), and 44 museums.

At the same time, the ministry is unable to obtain reliable information about the state of cultural heritage sites located in the temporarily occupied territories, Chueva said.
