Nov 23 (Interfax-Ukraine) – International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi met with a Russian delegation led by Rosatom head Alexei Likhachyov to discuss the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and steps to establish a nuclear safety and security protection zone around the facility, the IAEA said on Wednesday.
"IAEA Director General met a Russian delegation led Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachyov in Istanbul today for consultations on operational aspects related to safety at Zaporizhia NPP," the IAEA said.
The parties also discussed the need to urgently create a nuclear safety and security protection zone (NSSPZ) around the facility, it said.
As reported, the IAEA Board of Governors last week adopted a resolution calling on Russia to immediately withdraw its military and other personnel from and immediately cease all actions against and at nuclear facilities in Ukraine. The document was supported by 24 out of 35 countries. Russia and China voted against.
The Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant has been under the occupation of the Russian Armed Forces since February 28 and the world community has repeatedly called on the aggressor to return control over the ZNPP to Ukraine.
The Zaporizhia NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and operates six VVER-1000 power units.
