Venice Commission provides urgent opinion on draft law on competitive selection for Constitutional Court’s judges – Sovhyria

KYIV. Nov 23 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The European Commission "For Democracy through Law" (Venice Commission) has provided an urgent opinion on the draft law "On Amending Some Legislative Acts of Ukraine Regarding Improving Procedure for Selecting Candidate Judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine on a Competitive Basis"" (No. 7662), said judge of the Constitutional Court Olha Sovhyria.

"The commission recommended that the Parliament adopt Bill No. 7662 simultaneously with the bill “On Constitutional Procedure” (No. 4533), which the commission positively assessed back in March 2021," she wrote on the Telegram channel on Wednesday.

Sovhyria drew attention to the fact that the conclusion generally positively assessed the efforts of the Ukrainian authorities to improve the competitive selection of candidates for judges of the Constitutional Court and provided appropriate recommendations for improving draft law No. 7662.

At the same time, as she noted, it is important that the Venice Commission defends its position on the need for comprehensive reform of the organization and activities of the Constitutional Court.

As reported, on September 6, the Verkhovna Rada adopted bill No. 7662, which proposes to provide for a competitive selection procedure for judges of the Constitutional Court (CC).
