Japan to allocate about $14 mln to fight global food crisis through Grain from Ukraine initiative – PM

KYIV. Nov 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Japan has decided to provide emergency grant assistance in the amount of $14 million to ensure the transfer to Somalia through the UN World Food Programme of wheat provided by the Ukrainian government and the further distribution of grain among local residents, Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida said on the occasion of the meeting at the highest level within the framework of the Grain from Ukraine initiative.

As reported on the page of the Japanese Embassy in Ukraine, a ship with this wheat is moored in the Odesa port, which should sail in the coming days.

Kishida expressed his gratitude to the Ukrainian government, as well as to other countries and international organizations that are making every effort to ensure a stable food supply despite the extremely difficult situation.

The prime minister recalled Japan’s announcement in July of this year about $200 million in aid to fight the global food crisis, including support for the expansion of grain storage capacity in Ukraine, which the country is steadily implementing.

"Taking this opportunity, I would like to express my gratitude to President Zelensky and all those involved who initiated the delivery of grain from Ukraine to African countries. I really hope that such initiatives promoted by the international community will lead to an improvement in the humanitarian situation and development of these countries," Kishida said.

The prime minister said that by taking over the G7 presidency next year, Japan will resolutely promote sanctions against Russia and support Ukraine to ensure an early peace and recovery.

Japan will also actively contribute to solving problems, in particular the global food crisis.
