Russian sergeant notified of suspicion of being involved in torturing former ATO participants in Kyiv region

KYIV. Nov 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine (PGO) has notified a sergeant of the Russian Defense Ministry of suspicion of being involved in torturing former participants of the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) in Donbas during the occupation of Kyiv region.

"Under the procedural guidance of the juvenile prosecutors of Kyiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a sergeant of the 83rd separate guards airborne assault brigade of the Russian Defense Ministry was identified and notified of suspicion of being involved in violating the laws and customs of war (Part 2 of Article 28, Part 1 of Article 438)," the PGO said on the Telegram channel on Monday.

According to the investigation, in February-March 2022, during the occupation of the village of Katiuzhanka in Vyshgorod district, the suspect conducted searches of houses in the village.

"The armed occupier illegally detained two men, who were former participants of the ATO. He threatened them with murder and demanded to provide information about the location of the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He was also interested in the location of the ATO participants, law enforcement officers and pro-Ukrainian citizens," the PGO said.

The Russian serviceman forced the men to go down to the basement of a local school, in the territory of which there was a room for torturing detainees.

"Illegal interrogation of the victims continued there for several days in order to obtain information. They were threatened with execution, beaten and tortured, they were not given food and water," the PGO said.
