By KYIV. Nov 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The foreign Ministers of Turkey, Finland and Sweden will hold a trilateral meeting in Bucharest on Tuesday on the issue of Finland and Sweden’s membership in NATO.
"The foreign ministers will hold a trilateral meeting," Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said, the Finnish news agency STT quoted him as saying.
The talks in the Romanian capital will be held as part of a meeting of NATO foreign ministers. Finland and Sweden will participate in this format for the first time as NATO observer members.
NATO member states signed protocols on the accession of Finland and Sweden to the North Atlantic Council on July 5, 2022. These states will join NATO as soon as all member states of the Alliance ratify the protocols of accession.
To date, out of 30 NATO member countries, Sweden and Finland’s membership in the alliance has not yet been ratified by Turkey and Hungary.
Hungary is expected to be able to ratify the relevant protocols early next year.
At the same time, Turkey blocked the accession process, demanding that Sweden and Finland declare Kurdish organizations terrorist and extradite persons accused of terrorism, as well as lift bans on arms supplies to Ankara.
