Some 12,000 residents staying in Bakhmut, town remains without electricity, gas supply, generators purchased – regional administration

KYIV. Dec 5 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The majority of the population of Bakhmut, Donetsk region, have been evacuated, however, 12,000 of 81,000 people are still staying in the town, Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration Pavlo Kyrylenko has said.

"The majority of people from Bakhmut left or were evacuated, because there is a direct threat to their life and health. Speaking about numbers, there are around 12,000 residents in Bakhmut – we are speaking about a town where 81,000 of people lived as of February 24 this year," he said on air of the national telethon on Monday.

Bakhmut has got no electricity and gas supply, however, generators, firewood and other heating equipment have been purchased for the residents who are staying in the town.

"It is simply impossible to restore electricity and gas supply – as soon as electricity supply is resumed, the enemy deliberately hits power lines in order to stop electricity supply. However, alternative sources, from generators to firewood and alternative heating sources, have been purchased at the expense of both the local budget and a relevant state subvention," Kyrylenko said.
