No skepticism in NATO about Ukraine's accession to Alliance – MP Cherniev

KYIV. Dec 9 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Head of the Permanent Delegation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Yehor Cherniev, who is a member of the Servant of the People faction, said he does not see any skepticism in the Alliance about Ukraine’s accession to the organization after winning the war against Russia.

"We have no other options. We can only have an intermediary option – until we win the war… After that – immediately Ukraine’s accession to NATO. In principle, this is taken rather positively, there are some controversies regarding conditions…" he said on air of the national telethon on December 8.

The MP explained that he meant whether Ukraine would join NATO with the presentation of a Membership Action Plan (MAP) in the Alliance or without it.

"I cannot see right now signs of absolute skepticism […] about Ukraine’s accession to NATO… There are ten to twelve countries that absolutely clearly speak in support of this and are ready to accept us without any MAPs even now, and there are countries that suggest elaborating a plan of Ukraine’s actions for becoming a member of NATO," Cherniev said.

There would not be any delays or formalities with Ukraine joining NATO after the war, since Ukraine in fact has been implementing the MAP in the form of yearly national programs for 13 years already.

"We should become a NATO Member State for own security, for security of the community, as soon as possible when the war is over," the MP said.

He also said that Ukraine’s victory in the war could be considered as fulfilment of the MAP for joining NATO.

"Victory in the war is actually the MAP for us," Cherniev said.
