Christmas tree lit up in Kyiv on Saint Nicholas Day

KYIV. Dec 19 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The main Christmas tree of Ukraine was lit up on Sofiyska Square in Kyiv on Saint Nicholas Day, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko has said on the Telegram channel on Monday.

"The Christmas tree is not as big and well-decorated as always. It is twelve meters high instead of 31 [meters high] as it was last year. We call it the Invincibility Tree," the mayor said, commenting on changes in the format of celebrations this year.

"This year we had a lot of discussions on whether we should put up a Christmas tree or not, considering the fact that we are living in the time of the war, shelling attacks and power outages. However, I think we made the right decision. There should be a Christmas tree! Our children should have a holiday! Despite all attempts of the Russian barbarians to deprive Ukrainians of Christmas and New Year joy," Klitschko said.

"I am sure that today, on Saint Nicholas Day, Ukrainians are making a wish of peace and victory. And it will come true. We trust in Ukraine. We trust in the Armed Forces of Ukraine," he said.
