By KYIV. Dec 19 (Interfax-Ukraine) – President of Energoatom Petro Kotin and CEO of Urenco Boris Schucht have agreed on long-term cooperation in the supply of enriched uranium for Ukrainian nuclear power plants from 2026.
Energoatom said on Telegram that Kotin and Schucht discussed the issue of increasing the supply of enriched uranium to Westinghouse for the production of nuclear fuel for Ukrainian nuclear power plants during 2024-2025.
At the same time, it is recalled that on August 1, 2019, Energoatom and Urenco entered into an agreement on the supply of such uranium. In April 2022, the next stage of negotiations between the companies took place against the backdrop of Ukraine’s complete rejection of Russian nuclear fuel.
As reported, following the results of negotiations with Urenco in April, the head of Energoatom noted that any cooperation with the aggressor country Russia, including the purchase of Russian uranium concentrate, is unacceptable for Ukraine, therefore Energoatom is ready to consider increasing purchases from Urenco.
Urenco Group specializes, in particular, in uranium enrichment (according to gas centrifuge technology), which is one of the technological cycles in the production of nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants. The company owns uranium enrichment facilities in Germany, the Netherlands, Great Britain and the United States and supplies fuel for nuclear power plants in 15 countries with a global share of about 29% in the global market for uranium enrichment services.
