U.S. Senate passes Justice for Victims of War Crimes Act, allowing foreign citizens to be prosecuted – PGO

KYIV. Dec 22 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The U.S. Senate passed the Justice for Victims of War Crimes Act, a law on justice for victims of war crimes, which lays the legal basis for bringing to justice all those who committed war crimes against the Ukrainian people, and also corrects gaps in U.S. law, the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) of Ukraine said on the website on Friday.

"The United States supports Ukraine not only in confronting the aggressor on the battlefield. There is a clear signal of support for our struggle on the justice front as well… We are now confident that those involved in war crimes committed in Ukraine will never have safe haven in the United States. Hopefully, we can say soon that they will not have it anywhere in the world. We are working on it," Prosecutor General of Ukraine Andriy Kostin said.

According to him, the adopted law allows the prosecution of war criminals in the United States, regardless of the location of the crime; it extends the statute of limitations for war crimes discovered years after they were committed; it also updates existing legislation to allow the prosecution of citizens of other countries. Previously, only U.S. citizens could be held accountable for these crimes, Kostin noted.
