Ukraine has good prospects on depriving Russia of UN Security Council permanent member status, excluding it from UN – Podoliak

KYIV. Dec 26 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine has good prospects regarding the call it initiated today to the UN member states on the issue of depriving Russia of the status of a permanent member of the UN Security Council and excluding it from this international organization as a whole, adviser to the head of the President’s Office Mykhailo Podoliak said.

"This [the exclusion of Russia from the UN] is absolutely possible and we have absolutely good prospects. Regarding all the initiatives that Ukraine offers the world to support today, and they are very important – and gradually these initiatives are being talked about in the world as important processes," Podoliak said on the air of a nationwide telethon.

As an example, the adviser to the head of the President’s Office cited the previously initiated creation of a Special Tribunal to hold Russia accountable for war crimes in Ukraine and the development of a mechanism for Russia to pay reparations.

"Six months ago, we didn’t even start talking about the Special Tribunal as a form of Russia’s legal responsibility for the war. Today, almost all EU countries, the G7, are already discussing the platform as such. mechanism for transferring funds to Ukraine by seizing Russian assets in other countries," he said.

According to Podoliak, the acceptance of Russia after the collapse of the USSR in the UN, including as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, was associated with a corruption component, in connection with which Russia did not go through a special procedure for joining the organization.

"A permanent member of the UN Security Council is the right of veto. Therefore, today we cannot get certain resolutions that are important for a number of countries that are consciously guided by the UN regarding what Russia is doing in Ukraine. And it would be important for us. Russia waging a full-scale war in Ukraine, and at the same time has a veto right on a key platform – this is nonsense," Podoliak said.

According to the adviser to the head of the Presidential Office, the exclusion of Russia from the UN initiated by Ukraine will become one of the key narratives of global politics in the coming months.

"Today, Ukraine is initiating the legal component of expelling Russia from the UN, and above all from members of the UN Security Council. And after that, I think, a month or two. You will see that this will become a key narrative of global politics. We will move into a series of legal discussions regarding, on the basis of which it is possible to exclude Russia and how quickly to do it. And after that we will do it," he said.

"As soon as we remove Russia from the UN, we will only get ‘benefits,’ because immediately it will be necessary to exclude from the UN such persons as the UN Deputy Secretary General for Anti-Terrorism, a citizen of Russia, Voronkov, who is an active officer of the Russian special services. Since, in fact, a person from a state sponsoring terrorism deals with issues of countering terrorism. The same applies to other UN committees. That is, when resolutions are being prepared, the Russian Federation blocks even this preparation or even legal advice on a particular document that the UN should adopt," Podoliak said.

Thus, the adviser to the head of the Presidential Office saud, Ukraine will be able to get results at any of the UN meetings, and secondly, Russia will stop interfering with the fact that it will not recommend at the meetings of the UN Security Council to consider the presence in Ukraine, conditionally, of "combat mosquitoes, etc."
