Georgian president avoids answering question on pardoning Saakashvili

TBILISI. Dec 28 (Interfax) – Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili said an answer to the question on whether she will issue a decree pardoning ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili "will be given when the answer is given."

Zourabichvili earlier said more than once she would not pardon Saakashvili under any circumstances.

At a Wednesday briefing, the president expressed displeasure about the actions by some people who had taken part in a rally held near her residence. More than 200 protesters, who were hurt under Saakashvili’s rule, reminded Zourabichvili of her words about pardoning him.

"When I learned about that rally, I wanted to go down to meet with these people, with whom I have fought more than one battle with the criminal Saakashvili regime, but some protesters, whom I don’t know who ran, made an attempt to break into the residence," Zourabichvili said.

The "controlled" people at the rally tried to pressure the president, she said.

"This pressure is coming from those people, that party whose current leaders were nowhere to be found in 2007, when the criminal regime fully revealed its face. Those people are now threatening me in various forms, teaching me how to fight against Saakashvili," Zourabichvili said.

She also said "there is some joint game of various political forces taking place" in Georgia, "which are allegedly in extreme opposition to each other," she said. However, she said these two political forces worked in one direction on the issue of Saakashvili’s arrival in Georgia.

"Some instigated Misha [Mikheil Saakashvili] to come, saying the people would take to the streets for him. Others instigated Misha using the Georgian mentality, if you are a man, try, come. Saakashvili’s arrival suited both. There have been no other issues except for Saakashvili in Georgia for more than a year now," Zourabichvili said.
