Two Russian soldiers to be trialed in absentia for shooting dead civilians during occupation of Hostomel

KYIV. Jan 2 (Interfax-Ukraine) – A criminal case against two Russian soldiers charged with shooting dead a civilian during the occupation of Hostomel, Kyiv region, has been sent to court after a pre-trial investigation had been completed, Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office said.

"Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office filed an indictment against two Russian servicemen who committed the murder of a civilian during the occupation of the town of Hostomel. The crime occurred on March 11, 2022 in the territory of the Hostomel animal shelter at Sviato-Pokrovska Street, where the occupiers set up a temporary military unit," it said on the Telegram channel on Monday.

During their stay in the territory of Hostomel, the Russian servicemen tried to involve the local civilian population in unloading and moving ammunition, the prosecutor’s office said.

"When one of the local residents refused to carry out this order, the invaders took the man to a forest for the purpose of intimidation, allegedly to be shot. When the local refused to help the invaders for the second time, one of the commanders ordered his subordinate to shoot the man," it said.

Prosecutors, together with the Security Service of Ukraine and the Criminal Investigation Department of Kyiv Police, have identified the Russian servicemen involved in the murder of the Ukrainian citizen.

"The indicated persons were notified in absentia of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – violations of the laws and customs of war, combined with premeditated murder. For committing a special grave crime, the military of the Russian Federation faces a punishment of ten to 15 years in prison or life imprisonment," the prosecutor’s office said.
