HACC extends for six months investigation into case of ex-governor of NBU Shevchenko

KYIV. Jan 4 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The High Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine (HACC) granted the NABU’s request to extend for six months the investigation in the case against former governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Kyrylo Shevchenko, who is suspected of embezzling funds from the state-owned Ukrgasbank (Kyiv), causing damage of more than UAH 206 million.

"Today, HACC granted NABU’s request to extend the investigation for another six months. Let me remind you that on December 8, the same court and the same judge chose the most severe measure of restraint for me. And only after 25 days, the NABU accusations bubble bursts, they ask for more year, fifth year, and the court agrees that there is no evidence base in the case and NABU should be given another six months to simulate "numerous investigative actions," Shevchenko wrote on Facebook.

"The NABU case against me is politically motivated, artificially created and does not contain any evidence. It will fall apart in any impartial court. If, of course, it comes to it," he also said.

As reported, early October, the anti-corruption authorities of Ukraine announced the exposure of the illegal activities of Ukrgasbank officials and the notification of suspicion to five main defendants in this crime, including the ex-head of the bank and resigned from the post of governor of the NBU Shevchenko.

According to the prosecutor’s office, it was established that the bank’s management, having information about banking service agreements concluded with large customers, used it to waste money.

On October 23, 2022, NABU put on the wanted list Shevchenko, as well as the deputy board chairman of Ukrgasbank Denys Chernyshov, deputy director of the department for working with corporate VIP clients Olena Khmelenko.
