Zelensky thanks Scholz for powerful defense aid package, discusses further cooperation to strengthen Ukrainian army

KYIV. Jan 6 (Interfax-Ukraine) – On Friday, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky had a phone conversation with Federal Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz.

"I had a phone talk with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. I thanked for the powerful defense package, including several dozen Marder vehicles and the Patriot system. We discussed further cooperation to strengthen the Ukrainian army," Zelensky said on Twitter.

Scholz, in turn, assured of continuing support for Ukraine in the war against Russia.

"The Ukrainians are bravely defending their country – also thanks to our help. In the face of the aggression unleashed by Russia, we are now also supplying a Patriot air defence system and Marder infantry fighting vehicles. You can count on our support, President Zelensky!" Scholz said on Twitter following the conversation.

As reported, on the evening of January 5, Scholz, following a conversation with U.S. President Joe Biden, announced Germany’s intention to join the United States in supplying Ukraine with an additional Patriot air defense battery. In addition, Germany announced the transfer of Marder infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine.
