Court seizes $2 mln worth assets of ex-minister of education Tabachnyk suspected of treason

KYIV. Jan 9 (Interfax-Ukraine) – A court imposed a seizure on the property of the former Minister of Education and Science Dmytro Tabachnyk, who is suspected of high treason, thanks to the materials of investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine, the SBU press service has reported.

"The total amount of seized assets is more than $2 million. These are, first of all, real estate, land plots and money in foreign currency," the SBU said.

To "hide" his fortune from possible confiscation in favor of the state, the defendant "transferred" it to his relatives in advance.

"However, the SBU exposed this "scheme" and obtained court permission to seize the assets of the ex-member of the Party of Regions. Among them is half an apartment in the historical part of Kyiv with an area of 126 square meters; a residential house with an area of more than 600 square meters; five plots of land in an elite suburban gated community near Kyiv with a total area of almost 1 ha; a bank account for $147,000," the SBU said.

In November of last year, according to SBU materials, Tabachnyk was informed of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason committed under martial law).

"According to investigators, he actively participated in the organization of pseudo-referendums in the captured areas of Kherson and Zaporizhia regions. To do this, he personally consulted local lobbyists and prepared a draft detailed memo to the Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation on the provision of armed protection of "polling stations," the SBU said.

The suspect is currently hiding from justice in the temporarily occupied Crimea.

"The Security Service is taking comprehensive steps to bring the perpetrator to justice for crimes against Ukraine," the SBU said.
