Labor market in Ukraine recovers by 50% in 2023 – study

KYIV. Jan 9 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The labor market of Ukraine has recovered by 50% in 2023, this year employers predict a shortage of qualified employees and an increase in salaries by 8-30%

These are the results of the December study by Work.ua presented on Monday.

"The Ukrainian labor market met the New Year with the explosions of Shahed UAVs, but with all the problems, it immediately got down to business. Applicants became more active on January 2 and in the first week of the month showed higher activity than in similar periods over the previous ten years," the report says.

Work.ua specialists noted that in December 2022, the number of offers amounted to 53,179 vacancies: despite the expected decrease in business activity in the winter period, shelling and blackouts, the labor market showed a better result than in December of the previous year.

According to published information, at the end of 2022, employers posted 89% of vacancies in Ukrainian and only 8% in Russian. The most Ukrainized city was and remains Lviv – 97% of vacancies in Ukrainian, Kyiv does not lag behind – 89%. At the same time, the highest dynamics of the growth of the Ukrainian language (doubled) and the fall of the Russian language are demonstrated by Dnipro, Kharkiv and Odesa.

The company emphasized that by the end of 2022, the front-line regions showed the greatest recovery dynamics in December compared to November: Kherson region – 66%, Mykolaiv region – 34%, Donetsk region – 30%, and Kharkiv region – 10%. It is noteworthy that after the de-occupation of Kherson, the number of vacancies in the region quadrupled – from 37 in October to 164 in December.

It is noted that during 2022 scammers became more active. Thus, the Work.ua website removed more than 600 fraudulent vacancies from "marriage agencies" and streaming sites.

The average salary in Ukraine throughout 2022 was at the level of UAH 15,000. At the same time, the highest salary was offered in Kyiv region – UAH 17,500 and remotely – UAH 22,500. However, for 2023, employers predict an increase in salaries from 8% to 30%, depending on the business sector, the military and economic situation in the country.

In 2022, about 2 million job seekers in the job market updated or posted their resume. In December 2022, there were 35% fewer new candidates than in December 2021.

Amid the migration of Ukrainians abroad, joining the Armed Forces of Ukraine, power outages, the total number of people of working age in the labor market has decreased. Employers predict a shortage of qualified personnel for 2023 if Ukrainians do not start returning from abroad.

It is clarified that the highest salaries (not IT and not managers) in December 2022 were offered to an international driver – UAH 40,000, a car painter – UAH 35,000, a realtor – UAH 30,000, and a diesel mechanic – UAH 29,000. The rise in wages of the latter is due to the increase in the use and need for maintenance of generators.

The lowest salary in December was offered to cleaners – UAH 8,000, veterinarian assistants – UAH 9,000 and dishwashers – UAH 9,000.
