ICRC calls unreliable info about transfer of humanitarian aid to Mariupol, says they control its use 'exclusively for humanitarian purposes'

KYIV. March 4 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Ukraine called unreliable reports about the recent transfer of humanitarian aid to temporarily occupied Mariupol.

“The ICRC has been present in Mariupol since 2014 exclusively to help communities affected by hostilities and provides humanitarian assistance to those in need,” Oleksandr Vlasenko, spokesman for the ICRC in Ukraine, told Interfax-Ukraine.

The International Committee of the Red Cross added that the humanitarian situation in Mariupol remains very difficult and many people need humanitarian assistance.

“That’s why the ICRC is providing food and hygiene kits to tens of thousands of people, as well as medical supplies, infection prevention supplies, water tanks and generators for healthcare facilities. In its humanitarian work in Mariupol, the ICRC is supporting social service providers with furniture, linens, household appliances and other items such as IT equipment. These donations are made solely for humanitarian purposes, in order to facilitate the distribution of humanitarian assistance to people who need it,” the Committee said.

The ICRC also stressed that it “systematically monitors how humanitarian aid is used to ensure that it is used exclusively for humanitarian purposes.”

Earlier, Advisor to the Mayor of Mariupol, Petro Andriuschenko, said that yesterday the ICRC delivered “humanitarian aid – computers and office equipment for the needs of the occupation administration” to Manhush.
