Denmark, Germany will jointly transfer 80 Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine – Defense Minister

KYIV. May 5 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Denmark and Germany are joining forces to transfer 80 Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine, Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said.

As Poulsen told the Danish TV channel TV2, the tanks should be ready for use in Ukraine by June 1.

Poulsen is currently on a visit to Berlin, where he is holding a meeting with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. They will also meet with children’s instructors who teach Ukrainians how to prepare for the use of tanks.

Leopard 1 tanks were withdrawn from service in Denmark in 2005.

“The tank has very good firepower and a good ability to navigate the terrain. And it is important that there is a very large number of them, and this is what Ukrainians need,” the minister said.
